Backsplash Decisions

I have been begging the hubby for months and months now to put a backsplash up in our kitchen.  We have a small, builder grade brown kitchen, and it definitely needs some personality in it!  Well, for mothers day, the hubs told me he would do the backsplash for me!  Yay, I'll take it!!  We have priced it out to have it installed, but for the small amount of area that we need tiled, we decided to tackle the project on ourselves.  This is the small area we have:

 

 

 

 

So, I have always just wanted basic white subway tile, but now that I see all these beautiful pictures popping up all over Pinterest, I'm second guessing my decision!  Look at all these beauties I've come across:

This is the kind of look I have always thought I wanted...basic white with light grout.  I love the clean look of it.

However, I do like this look also...the grout is darker, like a taupe color, but still dark enough to give it a nice contrast.

 How cool is this?!  I never would have thought of placing the tile vertical instead of horizontal.  I kind of love it!

Here is a look with dark gray grout.  I usually am not a fan of dark grout...but it is starting to grow on me...

Love, love, love.  This is my favorite look by far!  I love the herringbone design they did, and I would love to do this in my kitchen...but I worry that my space is too small to pull off this look...

Colored tile...oh how I love this.  I would do this in a heartbeat if I had white cabinets.  Maybe in my next house:)

 

So, what are your opinions on the subway tile?  I need all the help I can get!!

Mother's Day

Happy Mother's Day to everyone out there!!  I'm so happy to be mom to my little 3...even though most days I have no clue what I'm doing, and sometimes want to run away!  They are definitely worth it.

Paint a Pillow?

I've been eyeing this fabulous gold striped lumbar pillow for awhile now, but I don't really like the $50 pricetag for it.  So, I came up with this genius idea to paint an old lumbar pillow case I've had around.  I have wanted to try the fabric spray paint for awhile, and I thought why not try it now?!

 I taped up the pillow and also taped it down to a drop cloth to keep it secure



Then I sprayed away!  I don't know why, but I forgot to take a picture of the spray I used...but this is it from Joann's:

It is definitely not as fast and thorough as regular spray paint, but it does do a good job on fabric, and doesn't leave it with that crunchy feel.  It was good for this small project since the bottle is so small.  Larger projects might get a little tricky though, it is $6/bottle and the spray nozzle takes awhile to use.  Anyway, here is how it ended up:

I was hoping for more of a metallic, shiny look of gold.  This kind of looks brown to me...so I am still thinking about it:)

I don't know, maybe I should spend the $50 and just get the perfect one!  Until then, this will have to do just fine!  Anyone else tried the fabric spray paint yet??

Playroom Progress

I have slowly been starting to get our playroom organized and a little more finished.  I started the process by making these silhouette art pieces of my kids that I blogged about here.  Well, I finished them for all 3 of my kids, and finally got around to hanging them.  Here is what the playroom looked like before:

I bought these fun polka dot decals from The Land of Nod, and I love them!  They add such a fun, whimsical touch to the wall, and best of all, they are removable! 

I am so far from being finished...and now I am in the process of painting this old bookshelf into some sort of storage solution...(it started out a yucky oak color, this is after I primed it).

So now I'm on the hunt for some inexpensive baskets to put in this bookshelf.  I am on a tight, miniscule budget for this room, so I am trying to get creative with the accessories.  Dollar store, here I come!  Stay tuned!!



Crazy for Coral

So, I am loving coral lately...I've been itching to paint something in my house this color.  It's just so happy and the perfect shade of pink!  Have you seen Krylon's Coral Isle spray paint?  It's a-mazing!! 

It's kind of hard to find, but my friend found some, and I borrowed her can and was scouring my house looking for something to paint!  I decided to paint an extra owl I had laying around (thats a weird sentence I just typed:)

He is just sitting on our computer desk right now, and I'm searching for something else to paint:)

I did find love with some coral shoes too...

DIY Silhouette Art

I've seen these fun silhouette art pictures all over the web lately, and thought I'd try and make some for our playroom.  I love the cute little profiles you make of your own kids and how recognizable they are to you.  Every little curve of their sweet face is just priceless and I'm so glad I'll have this as a permanent reminder from when my kids were young!  I did this the easiest way I could think of, so here is what I did:

#1: Take a profile picture on a white/light background and print it out on your computer...just on normal printer paper. (Sorry for the turned picture...I could not figure out what was going on!)

#2: Outline the entire profile with a black marker or dark pen

#3: Tape the picture and a blank paper up to a window and trace the profile again by seeing the outlined black marker through. 

#4: Cut out the silhouette and trace it again on some thicker cardstock, or patterned paper...whatever you want the final silhouette to be on.

#5: Now your final silhouette will look like this!  I framed mine in a cheap frame from Ross, sprayed it and used some old fabric I had as the backgound. 

You can have as much fun with this project as you want!  You can use fun scrapbook paper, fabric, wrapping paper or pretty much anything you can find as your background.  I was even contemplating cutting up a super cute beach towel I found!  You can also make the silhouette large or small...just change the size of the picture when you print it out on your computer.

I hung this in our playroom and plan on doing one for each of my boys as well.  The playroom is slowly making some progress!

 I love these...makes me smile every time I look at it and see my cute daughters profile.  Have fun with this super easy project!!

The Look for Less

I have talked about my love for HGTV Magazine a little bit in a previous post.  Well, it is by far my favorite home decor magazine for many reasons.  One of those, is I feel like the design is very attainable.  A lot of times you see these outrageous designs in magazines, and you think, "ya right, that does not look livable!"  The rooms in HGTV are realistic to me, and most of the time, affordable too. 

Well, ever since I saw this design by Sabrina Soto in a recent issue, I fell in love!  I just love everything about it.  So, even though I do not know the exact price of the room, I decided to try and recreate the look for less.  Here is the fabulous room!:

I know everything is not exactly the same, but I think it does have the same feel.  I also don't know for sure if these items are less expensive, but I am willing to bet on it!:)  I love looking for a good deal...for pieces that have the same look as designer, but definitely not the same price tag.  I completly think design can be attainable and affordable...it's just a matter of looking around, and you can always find something similar for a much lower price!
